While Gwent has gone on to become a proper standalone game, it got its start as a mini-game in The Witcher 3, with many falling in love with the in-depth side activity. It also inspired plenty of memes, as Geralt could ask most characters he came across whether they were up for a round of Gwent - even when he was on an urgent search for Ciri. While there are many viable strategies and decks in Gwent, even the best players lose from time to time.

Reddit user Split2ideZ shared a clip depicting the end of a Gwent match, with the player having lost the final round in what looked like a close game. After a brief message about their defeat, and Geralt’s opponent offering a rematch, the game suddenly switches to the “you are dead” screen. With this screen coming completely out of nowhere, and Geralt not even having a chance to reply, it is hard not to laugh at the unexpected bug.
While being upset about a Gwent loss is understandable, dying over it is a bit of an overreaction, especially for a Witcher that has fought many beasts from all across The Continent. Unsurprisingly, the post did well on Reddit, bringing in hundreds of upvotes and entertaining comments. Some players laughed at the bug itself, while others poked fun at the Redditor’s poor decision-making in the Gwent match. One player added that they were horrible at Gwent, finding the clip relatable.
As funny as the bug is, it is hard to think of why it happened in the first place. After all, Geralt can be seen inside a building talking to the Witcher 3 NPC that won the game, so there were no creatures nearby that could have been responsible for the kill. With no possible justification for what happened, it truly seems like the game was poking fun at the player, acting as if their loss was so embarrassing that Geralt could not live on any longer.
With a new Witcher game on the way, it will be interesting to see if Gwent makes a return alongside it. Given the popularity of the card game and its success as a standalone title, though, it is unlikely that it will be left behind - but hopefully Gwent games in the next Witcher title prove to be a bit less deadly.
The Witcher 3 is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One. PS5 and Xbox Series X versions are currently in the development.
