When thinking about areas in The Last of Us 2 that could easily result in death, a few scenarios should immediately come to mind. The boss fight between Abby and Ellie toward the end of the game, Abby’s encounter with the Rat King, and some of the scenarios with Stalkers are dangerous moments for those on permadeath. Even random encounters with Seraphites can be a challenge, though none of these riskier moments were the cause of death for Reddit user ThePopcornDude. Instead, they died from a fall.

While fall damage is very much present in The Last of Us 2, there are few scenarios where gamers can actually get themselves killed by taking a tumble. The ambulance bridge in the open Seattle section near the start of Ellie’s story is one of the only areas where players are likely to die from falling in The Last of Us 2, though this is not where ThePopcornDude got themselves killed. Instead, they died in a part of this free roam area that should not have caused them harm at all.

The hilarious clip shows the Redditor opening a safe, looting the materials, and vaulting over a railing, likely planning to continue exploring. However, Ellie ends up dying as soon as she hits the floor, entering the fall animation and splatting onto the ground like she had just leapt from a great height. Though this fall would surely not kill someone, and she should have landed on her feet, the Redditor’s permadeath run was brought to an unexpected end.

Unsurprisingly, this post has done well on Reddit, bringing in nearly 2,000 upvotes from entertained fans. The top comment comes from ki700, who finds it hilarious that people are still being killed by the “very safe-looking drop” years later. According to this commenter, they died the exact same way on their first playthrough and were shocked that such a small fall was deadly. Others theorize that Naughty Dog put this death spot into the game on purpose to mess with players, while some add that this is a reason they do not engage with Permadeath mode.

Though it is true that this Permadeath run of The Last of Us 2 was ruined, the Redditor is fortunate that this area comes very early in the game. Not counting cutscenes, there is only about an hour of gameplay before this safe is encountered, so ThePopcornDude should be able to get back to this safe quickly.

The Last of Us 2 is available now on PS4.
