High on Life is the latest title from Squanch Games, a studio founded by Tanya Watson, formerly of Epic Games, and Justin Roiland, co-creator of animated sitcom Rick and Morty. As one who is familiar with Roiland’s work might expect, Squanch Games is known for filling its titles with bizarre and wacky humor such as its VR game Accounting made in collaboration with the studio Crows Crows Crows, best known for The Stanley Parable. Roiland’s style of humor has translated well into the works of Squanch Games and High on Life is no exception.

In the short time since its release, players have been quick to find allusions to pop culture such as a prominent Fallout reference in High on Life being included in one of the game’s achievements. One fan on Reddit has found what they believe to be a Breaking Bad reference in the form of a pizza on a rooftop. This refers to a popular scene from the third season of Breaking Bad where the protagonist Walter White angrily throws a pizza onto the roof of his family’s home. This scene has long been the subject of jokes and memes among the show’s fans, making it a fitting inclusion in High on Life’s humorous setting.
The popularity of Breaking Bad and its spinoff Better Call Saul in recent years have made both shows the subjects of countless memes which have skyrocketed in popularity across social media. These can range from simpler memes referencing characters in the show to full fan creations like a Breaking Bad fighting game trailer. With Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul being two of the most acclaimed shows in recent history, they will likely continue to be humorously referenced in future works for years to come.
This is just one example of a prominent allusion to pop culture found in High on Life, but it is clear that Squanch Games did not shy away from including these sorts of allusions. Justin Roiland stated in an interview with YouTuber OddHeader that he enjoys putting secrets and easter eggs into the games he works on, some of which have yet to be found by players. Given that High on Life just released this week, gamers can expect to continue uncovering more references for a long time.
High on Life is available for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
